ALCL stands for anaplastic large cell lymphoma. The abbreviation does not refer exclusively to an implant-related condition. The rare form associated with breast implants is called BIA-ALCL and mainly involves the fluid or capsule tissue around the implant.
The type of implant surface is particularly relevant. New swelling, fluid collections or lumps in a breast with an implant should be investigated, even long after the operation. Self-assessment alone cannot reliably identify the cause of symptoms.
The existence of this risk alone does not mean that all implants should be removed as a precaution. Individual assessment takes account of the specific implant, any symptoms and the available examination findings.
