Anaplastic large cell lymphoma, or ALCL, is a type of lymphoma. It has several subtypes. Breast implant-associated ALCL, known as BIA-ALCL, usually develops in fluid or capsular tissue around an implant and is distinct from conventional breast cancer.
BIA-ALCL is reported mainly in association with textured implant surfaces. Persistent swelling that develops some time after surgery, a new fluid collection or a lump in a breast with an implant requires specialist assessment. A family history of breast cancer alone does not indicate an individual's BIA-ALCL risk.
Assessment may include imaging and targeted testing of fluid or tissue. The treating team decides on the next steps according to the findings. The implant card and previous operation records help identify the product used.
