Antibiotics are medicines used against certain bacterial infections. Depending on the active ingredient, they kill bacteria or inhibit their multiplication. They do not work against viruses.
Around the time of surgery, antibiotics may be used to treat an infection or, in selected situations, to prevent one. They are not automatically needed after an aesthetic procedure. The decision takes account of the type of procedure, individual risks and possible pathogens.
Possible side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms and allergic reactions. Unnecessary or inappropriate use can encourage the development of resistant bacteria. How antibiotics are taken, the duration and any changes should follow the doctor's prescription.
