Breast asymmetry means differences between the right and left breast. These may involve volume, shape, the crease beneath the breast or the position of the nipple and areola. Slight differences are common and are not, in themselves, a medical condition.

There is no universal percentage or measurement in centimetres above which surgery becomes necessary. Assessment considers the extent of the difference, how it has developed, any symptoms and its personal impact. A new change should be medically investigated before an aesthetic correction is planned.

Depending on the findings, options may include implants of different sizes, fat transfer, a breast lift or a reduction. Increasing breast volume can also make existing differences more noticeable. Complete symmetry cannot be promised; the degree of improvement that may be achievable is discussed in relation to the starting point.
