Atrophy means a reduction in tissue. In the breast, it may particularly affect glandular or fatty tissue and be accompanied by a loss of volume. It may be associated with hormonal changes, weight loss, ageing or changes after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

When breast augmentation is planned, tissue thickness, skin quality and the support provided by the existing structures are assessed. An implant needs to suit the tissues. Excessive weight or unfavourable pressure on the overlying structures can cause problems over time.

Atrophy is not inevitable after every breast augmentation, nor does it follow one fixed course. A sudden change or a change affecting one side requires a separate assessment. Planning takes existing symptoms and possible later changes in the breast into account.
