Blepharoplasty is the medical term for surgery to reshape the upper or lower eyelid. It may address excess skin or certain changes in fat tissue. The examination findings determine which structures are adjusted.

On the upper eyelid, an external incision is often placed in the natural crease. For the lower eyelid, an external or internal approach may be used, depending on the technique. Drooping of the eyebrow or weakness of the muscle that lifts the eyelid requires separate assessment.

Depending on the approach, surgery may leave external scars. Possible risks include dry eyes, asymmetry, bleeding after surgery and eyelid malposition. Existing eye conditions, medications and previous procedures must be disclosed beforehand.
