A Brazilian butt lift, or BBL, changes the contour of the buttocks by transferring a person's own fat. The fat is first removed from another area by liposuction, processed and then placed in the buttocks. This is a surgical procedure with risks at both the donor and recipient sites.

Using a person's own fat does not make the procedure inherently low risk. A particularly serious complication is fat embolism, in which fat enters the bloodstream; this can be life-threatening. Infection, tissue damage, asymmetry and partial loss of the transferred fat are also possible.

Qualifications, technique, an appropriate medical setting and aftercare are central to an individual assessment. Detailed informed consent must also address the method's limitations and alternatives. A fixed volume or a particular buttock shape cannot be guaranteed.
