Breast augmentation means enlarging the breasts. It can be performed with implants or, in suitable cases, with fat transferred from the person's own body. The first enlargement using implants is called primary augmentation; later procedures are described as revision surgery or implant replacement, depending on the reason.

The appropriate approach depends on breast shape, tissue and the desired change. A given volume cannot reliably be equated with a fixed bra cup size. Shape and size are assessed in relation to the whole chest.

The information discussed before surgery includes scarring, changes in sensation, possible effects on breastfeeding and complications specific to the procedure. Further examinations or operations may be needed later.
