Breast implant replacement involves removing an existing implant and replacing it with another. Reasons may include implant damage, capsular contracture, displacement or a change in the desired shape and volume. Removal without a new implant is another possible option.
Surgery is planned around the existing capsule, tissues and implant pocket. The capsule does not require the same treatment in every situation. A breast lift or adjustments to the implant pocket may sometimes be helpful. The original scar can often be used, although it may need to be extended.
Replacement carries its own surgical and anaesthetic risks and does not guarantee lasting freedom from symptoms. Previous operation reports, the implant card and current examination findings help with planning. Aftercare depends on the procedure actually performed.
