Breast augmentation can use implants or processed fat taken from the person's own body. The suitable method depends on the existing breast, skin, desired change and health. Both are surgical treatments, with different limitations.

For implants, size, shape, surface, position and the surgical approach are discussed. Fat transfer requires enough suitable fatty tissue. Some of the transferred fat may be reabsorbed, and several procedures are sometimes needed. Fat transfer cannot achieve every desired change in volume.

Possible consequences include scars, infection, asymmetry and changes in sensation. Implants carry additional product-specific risks. Choosing a particular surgical approach cannot guarantee the ability to breastfeed. The aim and the change that can realistically be achieved are discussed in person.
