The term fat-dissolving injections commonly refers to injection lipolysis. An active substance is injected into a selected area of fatty tissue to damage fat cells and trigger their subsequent breakdown. It is important to distinguish the active substance, the specific product and its approved uses.
The procedure may be considered only for limited, localised fat deposits. It is not a treatment for excess weight and does not automatically replace liposuction or skin tightening. Several sessions may be needed; the extent and evenness of the result vary from person to person.
Possible effects include pain, swelling, bruising, inflammation and tissue damage. Depending on the area treated, nerves or nearby structures may also be affected. Self-administration is not a safe alternative to medical examination and treatment.
