Gel bleed describes the diffusion of small silicone components through an implant shell that appears intact. It is different from rupture, in which the shell has a tear or hole. The word “bleed” is figurative here and does not refer to bleeding.

The construction of the shell and filling influence an implant’s properties. A brand name, looking at a sample or a before-and-after photograph cannot reliably rule out gel bleed.

If symptoms or new changes occur, assessment takes account of the specific implant and suitable investigations. The implant card and operation records help clarify the situation. Statements about clinical significance must relate to the particular product and findings.
