Hyaluronic acid is a water-binding molecule found naturally in various tissues. Aesthetic medicine uses preparations with deliberately adjusted properties, for example to change lip contours or facial volume.

Products differ in composition, cross-linking, firmness and intended use. The appropriate choice depends on the tissue, the area being treated and the treatment goal. A particular quantity or duration of effect cannot be specified without considering both the product and the individual.

An injection adds volume locally; it stops neither skin ageing nor the development of further wrinkles. Even a substance that occurs naturally in the body can cause adverse reactions and other complications. Accidental injection into a blood vessel can be particularly serious.
