An incision is a deliberate cut into tissue, for example during surgery. Its position and length are chosen to provide adequate access to the surgical area while protecting surrounding structures as far as possible.

Natural skin folds and tension lines may be taken into account when planning an incision. However, a particularly short incision or one promoted as a special technique is not automatically better. A clear view of the surgical area, an adequate blood supply to the tissue and wound closure with minimal tension also matter.

The eventual scar depends on the incision and suturing technique as well as individual healing, skin type, tension on the wound and aftercare. Magnifying loupes, fine instruments or particular suture materials may form part of a technique, but they cannot guarantee an invisible scar.
