The body normally forms a thin capsule of connective tissue around a breast implant. In capsular contracture, this capsule thickens or tightens. The breast may then become firm, change shape or feel painful.

Normal capsule formation is not the same as capsular contracture that needs treatment. The condition is assessed according to its severity and symptoms. New changes should be examined because other causes are also possible.

Not every finding requires immediate surgery. If symptoms are pronounced, options may include surgery on the capsule, replacement of the implant or implant removal. The choice depends on the overall situation. Capsular contracture can recur even after treatment.
