Labiaplasty is surgery to alter the labia. The term often refers to reducing the inner labia, which is different from altering the outer labia. There is considerable natural variation in their size, visibility and symmetry.
Before surgery, symptoms, personal expectations and possible alternative causes are assessed. Friction or pain can have various causes. A particular shape is not automatically more hygienic or functionally better.
Possible consequences include scarring, problems with wound healing, pain and altered sensation. Improved sexual sensation cannot be guaranteed. Consent and planning should take place without time pressure and after a clear explanation of the alternatives.
