Lipodystrophy is an umbrella term for disorders of fatty tissue. Depending on the form, individual areas or larger parts of the body may be affected. There are congenital and acquired forms, with different causes and associated conditions.

Changes at repeatedly used injection sites require a more specific assessment. Insulin treatment, for example, can lead to thickening or loss of subcutaneous fatty tissue. Lipoedema is a separate condition and should not be equated with every form of lipodystrophy.

Assessment takes account of the distribution and progression of the changes, medications and possible metabolic abnormalities. A cosmetic contouring procedure does not replace investigation of the cause. Any changes to medically necessary injection treatment are agreed with the treating team.
