Liposuction is the medical term for surgical fat removal. It removes fatty tissue from selected areas of the body to change their contours. Local fat distribution is influenced by factors including genetic predisposition, hormones and weight. A particular fat deposit cannot be attributed solely to lack of exercise or poor diet.

Planning takes account of the area, skin elasticity, extent of treatment and health status. Different techniques are available. Suitability depends on the findings and experience with the method. A device name or an unusually long procedure alone does not demonstrate a better result.

Liposuction is not a treatment for excess body weight. Remaining fat cells can enlarge if weight is gained. Possible risks include bruising, infection, uneven contours, fluid collections and, rarely, serious circulatory or vascular complications. Aftercare is part of the treatment plan.
