Lymphatic drainage refers to methods intended to support the removal of fluid from tissues. Manual lymphatic drainage uses specific physiotherapy techniques. Device-based compression works on a different principle and should not be equated with every form of manual treatment.

After certain procedures, this treatment may form part of aftercare. Whether and when it is suitable depends on wound healing, swelling and medical findings. Severe or newly developing swelling should be assessed first.

A general ranking into four quality levels, with the highest supposedly available only in professional sport, is not a reliable medical standard. What matters is the specific method, appropriate use and possible contraindications. More intensive treatment is not automatically more effective or safer.
