Mastopexy is the medical term for a breast lift. Skin and existing tissue are adjusted to change the shape of the breast and, where appropriate, the position of the areola. The procedure does not automatically increase breast volume.
Depending on the findings, incisions may run around the areola, vertically down to the fold beneath the breast, or also along that fold. Combining the lift with an implant is called augmentation mastopexy. The goals and additional risks need to be considered together.
Even a carefully performed breast lift leaves scars. Wound healing, blood supply, sensation and the ability to breastfeed may be affected. Later pregnancies, weight changes and ageing can alter the shape again.
