Scar treatment may improve symptoms, movement or the appearance of a scar. The choice depends on whether the scar is, for example, raised, indented, widened, red or painful. Its age and location on the skin also matter.

Depending on the findings, options may include silicone products, pressure treatment, injections, lasers or surgical revision. Not every approach suits every scar. New skin findings or unusual changes should be examined before aesthetic treatment.

Surgical revision replaces an existing scar with a new wound and, later, a new scar. It cannot leave the area entirely scar-free. Potential benefits, healing time and the risk of another noticeable scar are discussed individually.
