The pectoralis major is the larger chest muscle. It lies at the front of the chest and contributes to arm movement. Its relationship to the implant pocket is important in breast augmentation.
An implant may, for example, be placed in front of the muscle beneath the breast gland, or partly behind the pectoralis major. In dual-plane procedures, tissue coverage is deliberately adjusted in different areas. The exact technique depends on anatomy and the planned result.
Placement behind the muscle can provide additional tissue coverage, but may also cause changes in breast contour during movement. No position is equally suitable for everyone. Advantages and disadvantages are weighed against the individual findings.
