Ptosis is a general term for the downward displacement of a structure. In the breast, it describes a sagging shape. The term is also used in other medical contexts, such as a drooping upper eyelid.
Assessment of the breast includes the position of the nipple in relation to the inframammary fold, excess skin and the distribution of breast tissue. A single distance measurement does not determine treatment on its own. Loss of volume and sagging can occur together.
Depending on the findings, a breast lift, a change in volume or a combination of procedures may be considered. Possible incisions run around the areola, vertically below it and, when needed, along the inframammary fold. The choice takes account of scars, tissue quality and the desired result.
