Saddlebags is an informal term for pronounced fat deposits on the outer thighs. Fat distribution is influenced by factors including genetics and hormones. These contours can occur at a normal body weight and do not necessarily indicate a medical condition.
Pain, tenderness or pronounced symmetrical changes warrant medical assessment, for example to distinguish them from lipoedema. Appearance alone is not enough to make that diagnosis.
Liposuction can change the local contour in suitable cases. It does not treat general excess weight and cannot reliably correct cellulite or excess skin. Risks such as uneven contours, swelling and wound-healing problems are discussed beforehand.
