Silicone implants are used for purposes including breast augmentation and reconstruction. Silicone breast implants typically consist of a silicone shell filled with silicone gel. These should be distinguished from other types, such as solid silicone implants for selected body areas.

Shape, profile, volume and surface are properties of the specific product. Selection depends on anatomy, tissue coverage and the treatment goal. A desired size cannot be chosen independently of the person's physical characteristics.

Silicone implants may remain palpable and can develop complications over time. These include capsular contracture, shell rupture and changes in position. Surface characteristics and product type are relevant to certain other risks. An implant identification card and the agreed follow-up remain important even years after surgery.
