With a transaxillary approach, a breast implant is inserted through an incision in the armpit. This places the scar away from the breast itself. Whether this approach is suitable depends on factors including the anatomy, the implant and the planned operation.

Other approaches use an incision in the crease beneath the breast or along the edge of the areola, for example. They differ in visibility during surgery, access to the implant pocket and possible effects on the tissues. Incision length alone is not evidence of quality; what matters is a carefully performed technique suited to the individual situation.

An armpit incision also leaves a scar. Later corrections or implant replacement may require a different approach. The position and development of the scar, together with possible changes in sensation, are discussed before surgery.
