Tuberous breasts are a particular pattern of breast development that usually becomes apparent during puberty. Features may include a narrow breast base, a short lower breast segment, a high inframammary fold and a prominent areola. Not all of these features have to occur together.
The extent may differ between the two breasts. Planning involves assessing the breast base, gland tissue, skin and areola together. There is no single procedure that suits every presentation.
Surgical correction may involve reshaping the tissues, adjusting the areola and, where appropriate, using implants or fat transfer. More than one stage is sometimes needed. The consultation includes discussion of residual asymmetry, scars and possible changes in sensation or the ability to breastfeed.
