Lower eyelid surgery addresses selected changes in the lower lid, such as excess skin, protruding fat or reduced eyelid support. Dark circles, by contrast, have a variety of causes and are not automatically removed by an operation.

Depending on the findings, fat may be repositioned or carefully removed. Access may be through the inside of the eyelid or an external incision. Additional procedures to support the eyelid are appropriate only in certain situations.

Possible risks include dry eyes, asymmetry, eyelid malposition and difficulty closing the eyes completely. Rare, serious complications can affect vision. Examination considers the eye surface, eyelid tone and previous procedures; it also guides appropriate aftercare.
