Outpatient care means that an examination or treatment takes place without a planned overnight hospital stay. A period of observation may still be needed after an outpatient procedure. Discharge depends on how the person is feeling and whether the medical requirements have been met.

Whether a procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis depends on its extent, the anaesthetic and the person's health. Minor injection treatments and some operations can be carried out this way. The term alone says nothing about the complexity or risks of the procedure.

Before the appointment, the journey home, an accompanying person, instructions after anaesthesia and contact arrangements if problems arise are discussed. You must not drive yourself immediately after sedation or a general anaesthetic. Consultation, time to reflect and consent remain separate steps, including for outpatient treatment.
