A barrier layer is a special layer within the shell of some silicone implants. It is intended to reduce the diffusion of small silicone components through the shell. Its structure and properties differ between implant models.

A barrier layer does not provide complete protection against all implant complications. It does not automatically prevent shell rupture, capsular contracture or displacement. The documentation for the specific product is essential when assessing its properties.

When choosing an implant, the shell, surface, filling, shape and size are considered together. A manufacturer's name or country of origin alone does not demonstrate superiority. Ask for an explanation of the product name, implant card, possible alternatives and planned follow-up care.
