Breast surgery can change the size, shape or position of the breasts. Implants, fat transfer, a lift and a reduction each have different requirements and limitations. The suitable method depends on your individual findings and treatment goals.

Personal consultation and planning

Only an in-person medical examination can establish which treatment may be suitable. The consultation covers your goals, alternatives, risks and the next steps.

Preparation includes discussing your medical history, medication and previous procedures. The treating clinician, actual treatment location and follow-up arrangements are clarified before any firm agreement is made.

What patients report four years later

The BREAST-Q questionnaire measures satisfaction with breasts on a scale. Average scores were higher after surgery in this silicone-implant cohort.

BREAST-Q · 0–100 points

BREAST-Q · 0–100 points. Before surgery: 31.5; After 1 year: 88.4; After 4 years: 86.1

A score, not a percentage. Higher values mean greater reported satisfaction.

How to read this chart No untreated comparison group; fewer women responded over time. These means do not predict complications or an individual’s satisfaction.

Data & study design

Prospective observational study of Natrelle implants funded by Allergan. Silicone cohort shown. The satisfaction scale had 11,295 respondents at one year and 9,135 at four years.

Possibilities and limitations

Possible consequences of breast surgery include scarring, wound-healing problems, asymmetry and changes in sensation. Breastfeeding may also be affected. Implants carry additional risks specific to the device and may require further surgery in the future.
