Extrusion means that an implant becomes exposed or protrudes through a wound or damaged skin. This is a serious complication that may arise, for example, from infection, impaired blood supply or severe problems with wound healing.
If an implant becomes visible or a surgical wound opens, immediate medical assessment is necessary. Further treatment depends on the condition of the tissue, any infection and the person’s general health. The implant may need to be removed.
An appropriate choice of implant, careful surgery and aftercare aim to reduce risks. They cannot reliably prevent extrusion in every case. Following aftercare advice is important, but a complication does not mean that the person affected has caused it themselves.
