In Germany, recognition as a medical specialist requires a completed medical degree, a licence to practise, the prescribed specialist training and a specialist examination. A research doctorate and the academic title Dr. med. are separate qualifications and are not required for specialist recognition.
The precise specialist title is governed by the applicable training regulations. When choosing a practitioner, recognised qualifications matter alongside experience with the specific procedure, a clear explanation of treatment and appropriate aftercare. The informal term cosmetic surgeon alone does not demonstrate a particular recognised specialist qualification.
Membership of a professional society can provide additional information, but it does not replace checking the practitioner's own qualifications. Questions about training, treatment experience and ongoing care should be answered before a procedure.
