Genital surgery is an umbrella term for a range of procedures in the genital area. These may include changes to the labia or mons pubis. The reason may be functional symptoms or a personal wish to change appearance.

There is considerable natural variation in shape, size and symmetry. Visible or larger inner labia are not, by themselves, a medical abnormality. Pain, rubbing or recurrent symptoms should first be assessed by a gynaecologist or another appropriate specialist to investigate other causes.

Surgery does not automatically improve sexual sensation or reduce infections. Possible risks include scarring, changes in sensation, wound-healing problems and pain. Consultation should cover alternatives and limitations and allow sufficient time to consider the decision.
