Lipoedema is a chronic condition in which disproportionate, usually symmetrical fatty tissue distribution in the legs, and sometimes the arms, is associated with symptoms such as pain on pressure or touch. It predominantly affects women. Body shape or weight alone is not enough for a diagnosis.

A classification based on the visible appearance of the tissue, often used in the past, does not adequately describe symptoms. A more pronounced appearance does not automatically mean more severe pain. Any coexisting lymphoedema needs separate assessment.

Treatment is guided by symptoms and associated findings. It may include exercise, individually appropriate compression and other supportive measures. Liposuction may be considered under certain conditions, but an indication cannot be based on a stage number alone. The current guideline and an in-person examination provide the basis for planning.
