Can Botox cause an allergic reaction?
Yes. Medicines containing botulinum toxin can cause allergic reactions, including severe reactions. Tell your treating doctor about any known allergies and previous reactions to injections. A product must not be used if you have a known hypersensitivity to it or to any of its ingredients. The ingredients vary between medicines.
Which symptoms need immediate medical attention?
Shortness of breath, swelling of the face or throat, hives accompanied by faintness or other circulatory symptoms, and difficulty swallowing or speaking require immediate medical attention. For acute, severe symptoms, call 112. Do not wait for a follow-up appointment or an email reply. Problems with swallowing, speech or breathing can also be related to other serious effects of botulinum toxin; they do not automatically confirm an allergy.
A small bruise, tenderness or local irritation after an injection can also occur as side effects, but none of these alone proves that you have an allergy. Have new, worsening or unexplained symptoms assessed. Photographs are not enough to make a diagnosis yourself.
How long do the effects of botulinum toxin last?
The effect develops over several days and is temporary. How long it remains visible depends on the product, the area treated and your individual response. A fixed duration of six to ten months does not apply to every treatment. The effect wearing off is also not the same as the medicine being broken down. At a follow-up, your doctor assesses the treated area, the effect and any symptoms together.
A historical patient account
Susan W. from Leverkusen described her crow’s-feet treatment at the time as follows. This translation of her German account reflects one person’s experience; it cannot predict your own results or how you will tolerate treatment.
My crow’s feet are a thing of the past and I simply feel much better. They were with me for quite some time and took a lot out of me. Now I go through each day without my crow’s feet and I am very pleased with the result. Thank you, Mc Aesthetics, for giving me such a wonderful new outlook on life.
The video about the treatment linked in the original article offers further personal insight. Images and patient accounts do not replace a medical discussion of treatment and risks; the conditions in which pictures are taken and the time since treatment affect what is visible.
How quickly does Botox work on forehead lines?
Initial changes may develop in the days after the injections. The right time to assess the result depends on the product used and how your treatment progresses. A visible effect after exactly 48 hours cannot be promised. Nor is it accurate to say, as a general rule, that the maximum effect is only reached after three months. A follow-up appointment does not automatically mean another injection.
When can treatment be repeated?
Treatment does not have to be repeated on a fixed schedule. The decision depends on the current findings, your wishes, your response so far and the instructions for the specific medicine. After a suspected allergic reaction, treatment must not simply continue as before; a doctor needs to assess what happened first. Different botulinum toxin products cannot be used interchangeably without considering their differences.
