How often can frown lines be treated with Botox?
Repeat treatment is planned around your response to the previous treatment, the current assessment and the information for the medicine used. It should not be repeated whenever you feel like it or automatically as soon as a little movement returns. Your doctor will assess how much effect remains, whether you have had any unwanted symptoms and what change you actually want.
For frown lines, the BOTOX product information specifies an interval of at least three months between treatments. This limit applies to that particular product; it is not an instruction to have another injection every three months. A longer interval may be appropriate in your case. The often-quoted range of four to six months is not a fixed schedule for every person or product either. A follow-up appointment is first and foremost an assessment.
How long does the effect last?
The effect develops over several days and gradually wears off. Its duration depends, among other things, on the product, muscle activity and your individual response. Promising six to ten months after every treatment would be unreliable. As movement returns, expression lines may become more noticeable again. The fading of the visible effect is not simply a measure of when the active substance has been completely broken down in the body.
A historical patient account
Eevi M. from Düsseldorf shared this account of her frown-line treatment at the time. The following is a translation of her original German words. It describes one person's experience and does not predict either your response or your satisfaction.
I feel much more comfortable in my own skin again. Whenever you go shopping, you feel as though people are watching you or everyone is staring at you. I thought for a long time about whether to take this step, but none of us is getting any younger, and I decided to go ahead. Looking back, I can say that I am very happy with my decision and will definitely come back. Thank you very much to Mc Aesthetics.
The video about the treatment linked in the original article is another of these personal insights. Differences in filming conditions and timing limit how well images can be compared. Accounts like these do not replace a doctor's explanation of the treatment and its risks.
Which risks need to be discussed before repeat treatment?
Treatment of wrinkles for cosmetic reasons can also cause side effects. Depending on the treatment, these include pain, bruising and unwanted weakening of nearby muscles, which may cause a drooping eyelid, for example. Allergic reactions and rare serious effects must also be considered. Difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing requires immediate medical help. This is why your consultation should cover known medical conditions, medicines and previous reactions.
Safety depends on an appropriate reason for treatment, medical planning specific to the product and consideration of your personal risks. The dose must be chosen carefully even for cosmetic treatment. Units of different botulinum toxin products are not equivalent. Choosing, administering and assessing the treatment are medical responsibilities; this information is not a guide to self-treatment.
Could my facial expression become too rigid?
Botulinum toxin changes the activity of treated muscles and can therefore also restrict facial expression. Careful planning cannot completely rule out an unwanted rigid appearance. Discuss which movements matter to you and which lines you still regard as part of your expression. Mc Aesthetics aims for a natural, expressive face guided by your own wishes. Choosing not to repeat treatment may also be the right decision.
