Understanding dark circles and clarifying your wishes

Dark shadows beneath the eyes are commonly called dark circles. They vary in prominence and can affect how you perceive your face. Whether they bother you and whether you want a change are personal decisions. Dark circles do not establish a lack of confidence or how other people see you.

At Mc Aesthetics, you can discuss your wishes and have the changes suited to your individual findings assessed. Mc Aesthetics values a natural-looking eye area that suits your personal expression. Your own eye shape and facial expressions should guide the aesthetic approach, rather than exaggerated forms or changing social media trends.

Dark circles may be associated with several influences. Lack of sleep can accentuate a tired appearance; stress and sleep problems should also be discussed. Inherited traits, thin skin, pigmentation, visible vessels and the shape of the tear trough may also play a role.

These distinctions matter because injections do not address every cause. Whether hyaluronic acid is an option at all is decided only after examination and an explanation of the procedure. No quick, simple removal of all dark shadows can be promised.

Skin, blood vessels and contours as possible causes

Blood vessels may be more visible through thin skin. A hollow between the lower eyelid and cheek can also cast a shadow. Dark colour does not, however, prove that there is very little fat in that area.

Pigmentation and lighting also affect its appearance. Skin and tissue distribution can change with age; an examination is needed to establish which factors predominate in an individual case.

Lack of sleep can affect the appearance of the eye area. Stress, sleep problems and eating habits therefore belong in a broad discussion of possible influences. They do not, on their own, explain a deep tear trough. Dark circles also cannot establish a nutritional deficiency; if one is suspected, medical assessment is appropriate.

Which options suit the cause?

Make-up may conceal dark circles to varying degrees, but it does not change their cause. This does not automatically mean that hyaluronic acid treatment is suitable. A filler may be considered for selected volume deficits; pigmentation or swelling require a different assessment. Even a product that breaks down over time can cause side effects and complications.

Have the eye area examined before treatment and ask for an explanation of the cause of the shadows or swelling. The consultation should cover suitable options, limitations, alternatives and the particular risks of injections in this area.

When might hyaluronic acid be an option?

A hyaluronic acid filler may be considered for a suitable volume deficit. It does not generally remove dark colour, swelling or under-eye bags. Although hyaluronic acid occurs in the human body, an injectable product is manufactured and has its own properties and risks. Its suitability for the eye area and your individual findings is assessed before treatment.
