Breast surgery can change the size, shape or position of the breasts. Implants, fat transfer, a lift and a reduction each have different requirements and limitations. The suitable method depends on your individual findings and treatment goals.

Personal consultation and planning

Only an in-person medical examination can establish which treatment may be suitable. The consultation covers your goals, alternatives, risks and the next steps.

Preparation includes discussing your medical history, medication and previous procedures. The treating clinician, actual treatment location and follow-up arrangements are clarified before any firm agreement is made.

Interpreting the evidence

Breast reduction was compared with a nonsurgical group in women with breast hypertrophy. Pain and quality of life improved in the surgical group.

Comparative findings apply to the selected study population and the tested approach. They do not replace an individual examination.

Source & context

Reduction mammaplasty is effective treatment according to two quality of life instruments. A prospective randomised clinical trial.

Possible consequences of breast surgery include scarring, wound-healing problems, asymmetry and changes in sensation. Breastfeeding may also be affected. Implants carry additional risks specific to the device and may require further surgery in the future.

Aftercare and everyday life

Recovery and the return to normal activity depend on the treatment and your individual healing process. Swelling, bruising and discomfort may occur. Your treating doctor will explain aftercare and when you can resume everyday activities and exercise.
