How does Botox treatment work?

To treat expression lines, botulinum toxin is injected into selected muscles. It temporarily inhibits the release of the chemical messenger acetylcholine at the junction between nerve and muscle. Muscle activity decreases, which can make lines caused by that movement less noticeable. This is different from injecting hyaluronic acid filler, which changes volume. Not every wrinkle or skin change can be treated in the same way.

What does planning and treatment involve?

The starting points are your wishes, an assessment of facial movement and your medical history. Mention previous treatments, known medical conditions, allergies and any medicines you take. Your doctor will explain whether treatment is appropriate, what its limitations are and which medicine is to be used. Units of different botulinum toxin products are not freely interchangeable.

After you have been informed about the treatment and given consent, the injections are carried out according to your individual medical plan. Needle punctures can be uncomfortable; pain-free treatment cannot be promised. Options to ease discomfort can be discussed if needed. A follow-up appointment is arranged according to the product and your progress. It is intended to assess the effect, tolerability and any remaining questions, and does not automatically mean another injection.

Redness, tenderness, swelling or bruising may be visible after treatment. Allow an interval before important events, agreed individually with your doctor. Ask which advice applies to your daily routine and whom you should contact if unexpected symptoms develop. When you can return to your usual activities depends on your recovery.

When does the effect start, and how long does it last?

The effect develops over several days and is temporary. The right time for a meaningful follow-up assessment depends on the medicine used and the area treated. Duration and strength vary from person to person. As the effect wears off, muscle movement may return and an expression line may become more noticeable again. A blanket promise of six to ten months would be unreliable; the visible effect and the complete breakdown of an active substance are different questions.

Before repeat treatment, the current assessment, your previous response and the product-specific instructions are reviewed again. Mc Aesthetics aims for a natural, expressive face. Discuss which facial movements you want to keep and whether you want any further treatment at all.

A historical patient account

Theresa M. from Leverkusen described her frown-line treatment at the time in the original account translated below from German. Her personal satisfaction does not predict anyone else's experience.

Thank you to everyone, I am so happy with the result! People so often asked me why I always looked so angry, even though I wasn't angry at all. Well, from today I no longer have that problem. I would like to thank everyone at the Mc Aesthetics team again in writing. You are simply brilliant.

Patient accounts can illustrate expectations. Your own decision still requires an examination and information you can understand. Lighting, facial expression and the timing of photographs all affect how the result appears in an image.

Is botulinum toxin a poison?

Botulinum toxin is a potent neurotoxin used medically in precisely defined medicines. Even in aesthetic medicine, there are limits to its use and risks to health. Unwanted weakening of nearby muscles may change the position of an eyelid or your facial expression, for example. Allergic reactions and rare serious effects are possible. Difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing requires immediate medical help; call 112 for sudden severe symptoms.

Assessing suitability, choosing the product and administering it are responsibilities for a qualified doctor. This information describes the procedure and does not replace a personal treatment recommendation. A separate article explains possible allergic reactions to Botox.
