Under-eye bags: filler or surgery?

If you would like a change around your eyes, the first step is to distinguish a hollow from swelling or bulging tissue. Hyaluronic acid treatment may be an option for selected volume deficits; lower eyelid surgery serves a different purpose.

Yellow, blue or dark discolouration does not automatically disappear with filler. Pain, swelling and bruising can occur, and recovery time varies. A consultation at Mc Aesthetics can help establish which options fit your clinical findings.

How are under-eye bags treated surgically?

Surgery for under-eye bags usually involves the lower eyelid. Depending on the findings, protruding fat may be repositioned or removed and excess skin treated if needed. An upper eyelid lift, by contrast, treats the upper lid and does not replace lower eyelid surgery.

Before an operation, the eye area is examined and the appropriate approach, anaesthesia and aftercare are discussed. Mc Aesthetics values a natural-looking eye area that suits your personal expression. Your own eye shape and facial expressions should guide the aesthetic approach, rather than exaggerated forms or changing social media trends.

During the medical consultation, your wishes, achievable changes and the limitations of surgery are discussed. Ask about qualifications and experience with lower eyelid surgery, as well as how complications would be managed. Make a note of unanswered questions; our social media channels offer additional insights.

What are under-eye bags?

Under-eye bags and changes to the lower eyelids can have different causes. Skin elasticity, protruding fat, swelling and the adjacent tear trough are assessed separately.

Surgery and filler are not interchangeable solutions for these findings. An examination establishes whether an aesthetic procedure is appropriate or whether another medical assessment is needed first.

Can injections treat under-eye bags?

Injections cannot generally remove a pronounced under-eye bag. In suitable cases, filler can alter an adjacent volume transition, but it removes neither protruding fat nor excess skin. Additional hyaluronic acid may be unsuitable if the area is prone to swelling. The cause of the visible change therefore needs to be assessed before a treatment is chosen.

Can under-eye bags recede?

Whether a change recedes depends on its cause. Temporary swelling needs a different assessment from persistently bulging tissue or excess skin. An examination helps distinguish these findings. Lower eyelid surgery and hyaluronic acid treatment are not interchangeable: one can address excess or protruding tissue, while the other may be considered for suitable hollows.

Experiences of under-eye bag surgery

Personal experiences may offer insight into expectations and healing. They cannot reliably predict your own result. Your clinical findings, an explanation from the doctor and coordinated aftercare are what matter when making a decision.

What should you do about swollen lower eyelids?

Have the cause of the swelling assessed first. Excess skin, fatty tissue and fluid retention require different considerations. Sudden or persistent symptoms should be medically assessed before any aesthetic treatment. You can read more about the surgical option under Lower eyelid surgery; you can also request a consultation at the Cologne location.

How can you prepare for a decision?

Write down what you would like to change around your eyes and how long the concern has been present. Discuss alternatives, recovery and planned follow-up appointments. Possible effects of lower eyelid surgery include bruising, irritated or dry eyes, asymmetry and visible scars.

Changes to the eyelid position and, rarely, serious complications such as impaired vision are also possible. Benefits and risks must be weighed individually before surgery.
